Do you have kids?: If so you’ll want to determine how big of an issue safety’s going to be. How old are your kids and do you ever leave them in the yard unattended? Ponds can be far more treacherous for children than pools and you need to figure out if fencing is a viable option.
What about pests?: Did you know yard ponds can attract all kinds of pests you wouldn’t have otherwise? Mosquitoes are the main culprit but everything from snakes to deer love free standing water sources. Find out how much extermination costs are and what is native to your region.
Can you afford upkeep?: Make sure you realize having a pond is more than digging a hole and filling it with water – a continuously full pond requires pesticides, cleaning solutions and moving water. This can mean installing a fountain or restocking fish that eat bacteria.
